Features

Bullockies on Devonport Wharf

A popular feature in our main gallery is the history of the Bass Strait roll-on/roll-off passenger and vehicle ferry service which began in 1959 - the first such service in the Southern hemisphere.

Compare this with the freight-handling methods depicted on this photograph from the early 20th century.

For something a bit older, visitors can enjoy the exhibit featuring the voyage of Joshua Slocum, the first man to sail alone around the world. Commencing from America in 1895 he subsequently spent a period of time in Devonport, the only occasion, he wrote in his story of the voyage, where he was tempted to give up and stay ashore. In honour of this visit the park in which the Museum building stands now bears the name, Joshua Slocum Park.

Other features we have on display are:

Displays of ship models and artifacts
Ship Photograph Collection
Holyman & Griffiths family memorabilia
Paintings
Maritime and Local History Libraries
Local History Research Room
Newspaper clippings files relating to maritime and local history
